Why Select Us?
How To Maintain a Pressure Treated Deck
A wood deck requires regular maintenance just like any other major part of a home. Regular cleaning and application of a high-quality stain and sealer will help protect your deck from the weather and ultraviolet ray damage caused by the sun and will extend the usable life of the deck. Committing to a regular schedule of maintenance and upkeep can give you years of enjoyment from your deck. Following these tips and checklists can help make it easier to keep track of your annual and seasonal deck maintenance routines.
- Clean your deck routinely: Cleaning your deck by sweeping off loose dirt, leaves, and debris will help preserve your deck’s natural luster. At least once a year, clean your deck using a wood deck cleaner.
- While we reccomend using a garden hose and brush broom for cleaning, you can also use a power washer to help speed up the cleaning process. However, power washers need to be set to a low setting to ensure the deck is not damaged. Softwoods may only require 500-600 PSI, while hardwoods can tolerate more, potentially up to 1200 PSI.
- Make Repairs When Needed: Pressure treated decks and other types of wood decks should be checked for loose, splintered, or rotten boards, then repaired. If you see nails or screws popping up, hammer or screw them back in place.
- Protect your deck with a sealant: Once your deck is clean and fully dry, sand it to remove any irregularities. Sanding provides excellent absorption for the sealant. Select a high quality sealant to protect your deck from cracking, splitting, and warping.
- Use a high quality deck stain: Use one or two coats of high-quality stain to give your deck a longer lifespan.
